Time to start the year with winter cleaning! When air hits sterling, over time sterling becomes tarnished. Below are a few tips for safely and easily cleaning sterling jewelry.

Sterling Silver Jewelry Cleaning Tip #1

Sterling silver can be scratched or become tarnished. Avoid exposing jewelry to harsh chemicals as these could possibly damage the silver. Use a polishing cloth specifically made for sterling such as Sparkle Sparkle polishing cloth. This is available at several locations and can be purchased at Amazon.

Sterling Silver Cleaning Tip #2

I like using Windex for cleaning sterling. You can spray Windex on the item and then brush with a soft-bristled toothbrush you reserve especially for this purpose. Another option is to drop the silver into a small container of Windex and let sit for a few hours, then run under water and brush lightly with the designated toothbrush.

Sterling Silver with Stone Cleaning Tip #3

To clean a piece such as this hand-fabricated sterling chain bracelet with labradorite clasp I made for Ginger, I suggest dipping the piece in Windex leaving the labradorite clasp hanging outside the small container. After the chain is clean, then use the polishing cloth for the clasp avoiding chemicals on the stone.
